Retainer Instructions

Wearing your retainer as directed is the key to keeping your smile straight after orthodontic treatment. Teeth can naturally shift over time, so it’s important to follow Dr. Burckhard’s recommendations to maintain your results.

How to Wear Your Retainer

  • Wear your retainers as instructed by Dr. Burckhard.
  • Remove your retainer when eating, brushing/flossing, swimming, during contact sports (in which case, wear a mouthguard), or activities like choir & band.
  • Always place your retainer in its case when it’s not in your mouth—pockets, napkins, and countertops are common places where retainers get lost or broken.

Cleaning and Care

  • Clean your retainer daily with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, or mild soap and water.
  • You may also use a denture-cleaning tablet (like Efferdent®) for a deeper clean.
  • Avoid hot water, boiling, dishwashers, or leaving it in a hot car—heat can warp the material.
  • Never soak your retainer in mouthwash, as it can damage the plastic.

Damage or Fit Issues

  • If your retainer is lost, broken, or no longer fits properly, stop wearing it and contact our office right away.
  • Wearing a damaged or ill-fitting retainer can harm your teeth or gums.
  • Avoid hot water, boiling, dishwashers, or leaving it in a hot car—heat can warp the material.
  • Never soak your retainer in mouthwash, as it can damage the plastic.
