Getting braces is a journey. Here’s how to protect your smile, stay comfortable, and make treatment go as smoothly as possible:
Stick to soft foods for the first few days. Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods (nuts, hard candy, raw veggies, gum, etc.). Cut foods like apples or corn off the cob.
Brushing after meals and before bed (aim for four times a day) plus nightly flossing are essential. Regular cleanings with your general dentist are also very important.
Initial soreness (especially after adjustments) is normal—use soft wax for irritation, and over-the-counter pain relievers (like Tylenol or ibuprofen) if needed. If a wire or bracket comes loose or something breaks, call us. Often there are ways to manage it temporarily until your next visit.
Wearing rubber bands or appliances as prescribed really matters. Poor cooperation or delaying care (ignoring breaks, missing appointments) can lengthen treatment time or affect final results.
